Spotlight on the craft of adaptation
David Eldridge is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter. His stage plays include “Beginning”, “Middle”, and “End”: “In Basildon” and “Under the Blue Sky”. In February 2026 ITV broadcast his limited TV series “Betrayal”. He has written new English versions of plays by Ibsen and Strindberg, a celebrated adaptation of the Dogme95 film “Festen” and the first ever theatre adaptation of a John le Carré novel with “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold”. He adapted “The Scandalous Lady W” for BBC2 from Hallie Rubenhold’s non-fiction bestseller and “Our Hidden Lives” from Simon Garfield’s tapestry of Mass Observation Diaries for BBC4. David is currently under commission to the Royal Court Theatre and has new TV series projects in development with Red Planet Pictures and The Forge.
