Memories Are The Stories You Tell Yourself

(recommended age: 14 – 16)

It’s fair to say the last year probably wasn’t one any of us expected. As we dust ourselves off, with new working environments and home arrangements springing up around us, we find ourselves navigating a world that feels familiar yet also markedly different. The impact of these changes seems to be especially acute for young people, and our new Arvon at Home Workshops for Children and Young People are designed with this in mind. They offer online opportunities for creativity and self-expression, outside the curriculum, for young people aged 8 upwards, whether from their own home or in a school classroom, under the guidance of expert tutors in poetry and prose.

This masterclass will demonstrate we all have stories to tell and our unique personal experiences can be the starting point for your writing. What to write about is always the question. We’ll do some fun exercises to show how lived experiences (yours and others) can be the starting point for your fiction. At the end of the session, you should see that everyone, especially you, have stories worth telling.

Jarred McGinnis’ debut novel The Coward is published by Canongate (July 2021).

Date: May 19th, 11:00 – 12:00
