Arvon at Home: Children’s & Young People’s Workshop with Cecilia Knapp

Finding The Magic of Writing

Thursday April 22nd - Thursday April 22nd 2021, 11:00 am BST

Finding The Magic of Writing

(recommended age: 14-16)

It’s fair to say 2020 probably wasn’t the year any of us expected. As we dust ourselves off, with new working environments and home arrangements springing up around us, we find ourselves navigating a world that feels familiar yet also markedly different. The impact of these changes seems to be especially acute for young people, and our new Arvon at Home Workshops for Children and Young People are designed with this in mind. They offer online opportunities for creativity and self-expression, outside the curriculum, for young people aged 8 upwards, whether from their own home or in a school classroom, under the guidance of expert tutors in poetry and prose.

This masterclass is all about having fun, letting yourself go and allowing freedom to be the springboard from which your writing can leap!

We’ll look at how we discover and generate ideas through free writing with various prompts, we’ll play with some exercises that help us let go and we’ll also draw on some exciting poems for inspiration. You should leave this workshop with ideas to take forward into your own writing, and some exciting early drafts that you can play with.

Cecilia Knapp is the young people’s Laureate for London. Her poems have appeared in The White Review, Magma, Ambit and Bath magazines. She was shortlisted for the 2020 Rebecca Swift Women’s prize and the 2020 Outspoken Prize. Her debut novel is forthcoming with The Borough Press.

Date: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm, 22nd April

Cost: £3

As part of an ongoing effort to make these workshops as accessible as possible, concessions are available. Similarly, if you are a teacher looking for free access for your class, we’d love to hear from you. In the event of either, please get in touch with Sophie Lloyd-Catchpole at
