Arvon at Home: Children & Young People’s Workshop with Daljit Nagra

Three Ways to Write a Poem

Wednesday June 23rd 2021, 14:00 BST

Three Ways to Write a Poem

(recommended age: 12 – 14)

It’s fair to say the last year probably wasn’t one any of us expected. As we dust ourselves off, with new working environments and home arrangements springing up around us, we find ourselves navigating a world that feels familiar yet also markedly different. The impact of these changes seems to be especially acute for young people, and our new Arvon at Home Workshops for Children and Young People are designed with this in mind. They offer online opportunities for creativity and self-expression, outside the curriculum, for young people aged 8 upwards, whether from their own home or in a school classroom, under the guidance of expert tutors in poetry and prose.

There are many types of poetry and in this fun session you’ll have a go at writing poems in three different ways. Learn how to write shape poems, personal poems and poems from different perspectives. You will explore new writing techniques and come away from the session having written three new poems.

Daljit Nagra is Advisor to Poetry By Heart, Chair of the Royal Society of Literature, teaches at Brunel University, and presents Poetry Extra weekly on Radio 4 Extra. His prize-winning poetry collections are published by Faber & Faber.

Date: June 23rd, 14:00 – 15:00
