Black British Voices: Poetry to Prose

(recommended age: 12-14)

It’s fair to say 2020 probably wasn’t the year any of us expected. As we dust ourselves off, with new working environments and home arrangements springing up around us, we find ourselves navigating a world that feels familiar yet also markedly different. The impact of these changes seems to be especially acute for young people, and our new Arvon at Home Workshops for Children and Young People are designed with this in mind. They offer online opportunities for creativity and self-expression, outside the curriculum, for young people aged 8 upwards, whether from their own home or in a school classroom, under the guidance of expert tutors in poetry and prose.

Novelist Ashley Hickson-Lovence leads an exciting hour-long workshop using magnificent poetry to write magnificent prose. Through a range of creative activities that draws on the work of contemporary Black British-based writers, we’ll journey through work with stanzas, similes and sibilance to help us write stunning short stories. The session will offer inventive activities encouraging you to respond creatively to source material from long-established Black voices.

Ashley Hickson-Lovence is the author of The 392 and Your Show. He is a former English teacher and is currently completing his PhD in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.

Date: Wednesday 21st April, 11:00am – 12:00pm BST
