Arvon at Home: Live Guest Reading

Reading and Q&A with Melody Razak

Wednesday September 15th 2021, 19:15 BST

Now more than ever we need stories – to engage, to distract, to entertain, to nourish, and to help us make sense of what we’re living through. And so while you can’t come to us, instead we will come to you, bringing a taste of Arvon into your home one night a week. Every week an Arvon tutor will join us as a guest, to read from their own work and answer your questions live and in person online.

This Live Guest Reading is with Melody Razak on Wednesday 15th September at 19:15 BST

Melody Razak is a British Iranian writer from London, with an MA in Creative Writing from Birkbeck. She has had short stories published in the Mechanics Institute Review, the Bath Short Story Anthology and the Brick Lane Short Story Prize. Before writing she owned treacle&co, a cafe in Brighton. In 2021 Melody was selected as one of the Observer’s ‘Ten Debut Novelists’.

Melody will read from Moth, her debut novel, which tells the story of a Brahmin family living in 1940’s Delhi during India’s Independence and subsequent Partition. It explores the impact of violence on the lives of the women who carry so much of the emotional labour during times of political unrest. It probes the structures of a fractious society and what it means to be free. It looks too at the domestic sphere, at different types of love and is ultimately a celebration of the human spirit.

The reading and interactive Q&A will be hosted on Zoom. This is a live event and will not be recorded.

We are more committed than ever to helping writers find inspiration, and to make space for their own creativity, no matter the setting. So join us from the comfort of your sofa and listen to writers share their work, the stories behind their work, and invaluable writing advice directly from their own desk (or maybe the kitchen table).

Cost: £5.00

Very lovely. It had an intimate feeling despite it being a Zoom event and all of us being in different places.

"Thanks for an excellent session last night. It worked very well on Zoom, especially with the Q&A using the chat function."
