Arvon at Home Masterclass: Holding and Letting Go

Writing and radical psychogeography - Zoom masterclass with Will Self

Thursday August 20th 2020, 11:00am BST

Our writing houses may be temporarily closed, but Arvon remains very much open: to helping people make space for creativity and to connecting them with the finest writing tutors. For the first time, Arvon is bringing its celebrated writing workshops online.

Arvon at Home Masterclass: Holding and Letting Go

From Proust’s ‘two ways’ at Combray, to the dimensions of Austen’s Mansfield Park – to the twin (municipal water) towers that JRR Tolkien could see from his Midlands window while writing his great saga, place and space have been fundamental to the formulation of creative prose.

Any journey – on foot, by bicycle, car or train – is also a potential narrative. As readers we feel intensely the influence of place and space on a piece of writing. For me place and space are integral to anything I create and in this session I will suggest ways of engaging with place and space that are immediate. I will propose the radical psychogeographic method I call ‘holding and letting go’: an amassing of data – topographic, environmental, historic, ethnographic etc – coupled with an explosive voiding of all preconceptions, so that the human subject once more assumes its place in the world, stripped of ideology and pretension, so able to hear and touch and smell and taste and hear anew.

The masterclass will be delivered via Zoom and will last two hours (11:00am – 13:00pm) including time for you to write. You will need to have a computer or smart device and a reliable internet connection in order to participate. This is a live event only and it will not be recorded.

There are limited number of grants available for people on low-income. These are allocated on a first come first served basis. Please contact to apply.

Cost: £35

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."

—Masterclass participant

"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
