Arvon at Home Masterclass: Narrative and the Art of Orientation

Zoom masterclass with Will Self

Tuesday August 17th 2021, 7:00 pm BST

In the city the human subject may feel themselves to be only a shadow cast by the buildings… A peculiarity of the intensity with which literature can immerse us in places and spaces is that we know whether a writer has been to a location that they describe even if we haven’t been there ourselves. The capacity of prose – if artfully composed – to place readers imaginatively in the most disparate environments is often belied by those novels and stories that treat of place and space as if they were mere ‘scenes’ or ‘landscapes’ in which readers are to be passively implanted. Join my masterclass on how take your readers – figuratively speaking – by the hand, and lead them both into well known places and mysterious spaces. Moreover, in considering place, space and their representation, we will also see how narrative itself is fundamentally concerned with orientation, and always has been. Furthermore, while not all narratives are travellers’ tales, every traveller’s tale is a narrative – so a good place to begin with writing is always by putting one foot in front of the other.

The masterclass will be delivered via Zoom and will last two hours (7:00 pm – 9:00 pm) including time for you to write. You will need to have a computer or smart device and a reliable internet connection in order to participate. Bookers unable to join the live session will be able to view this Arvon Masterclass for up to two weeks after the event. You must book your place before the event starts in order to access this facility.

As part of our wider effort to increase participation in the arts, concessionary places are available for this course.

Cost: £35 (concession: £17.50)

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."

"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
