Arvon at Home Masterclass: Nature Writing and Your Senses

Zoom masterclass with Stephen Moss

Thursday August 12th 2021, 11:00 BST

Sight is the primary sense we use when experiencing, appreciating, and writing about the natural world. Yet our other senses – hearing, touching, smelling, tasting and touching – also provide a gateway into conveying our experiences on the page; indeed, they can be fresher and more powerful than simple visual description. How can we use these often-neglected senses as a tool in our writing armoury, to convey our experiences to our readers? In this session we will try writing the senses, and examine how and why this approach works.

The masterclass will be delivered via Zoom and will last two hours (11:00 – 13:00) including time for you to write. You will need to have a computer or smart device and a reliable internet connection in order to participate. Bookers unable to join the live session will be able to view this Arvon Masterclass for up to two weeks after the event. You must book your place before the event starts in order to access this facility.

As part of our wider effort to increase participation in the arts, concessionary places are available for this course.

Cost: £35 (concession: £17.50)

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."

—Masterclass participant

"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
