Arvon at Home Masterclass: Serious Fun

Zoom masterclass with Daljit Nagra

Tuesday April 27th 2021, 7:00pm GMT

Writing that seeks to explore serious issues can sometimes feel burdened, too earnest, with a directness that feels almost overpowering for the reader. In this masterclass, we shall write in ways that make a weighty subject feel alive and playful while still retaining necessary gravitas. With an emphasis on poetry, we’ll consider multi-textual approaches and methods that take us away from the purely conventional. Expect to come away having started at least two exciting new pieces!

Daljit Nagra is Chair of the Royal Society of Literature, teaches at Brunel University, and presents ‘Poetry Extra’ weekly on Radio 4 Extra. His prize-winning poetry collections are published by Faber & Faber.

The masterclass will be delivered via Zoom and will last two hours (7pm – 9pm) including time for you to write. You will need to have a computer or smart device and a reliable internet connection in order to participate. Bookers unable to join the live session will be able to view this Arvon Masterclass for up to two weeks after the event. You must book your place before the event starts in order to access this facility.

There are limited number of grants available for people on low-income. These are allocated on a first come first served basis. Please contact to apply.

Cost: £35

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."

—Masterclass participant

"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
