Arvon at Home Masterclass: Short Stories – Finding Your Voice

Zoom masterclass with Lucy Caldwell

Thursday September 30th 2021, 11:00 BST

Who is telling your story? And where, in relation to them, does it come from? In this masterclass, we’ll explore ways of finding the perfect point of view for your story, whether it’s flash fiction or a full-length novel. We’ll look at power, reliability, intimacy; at the pros and cons of different forms of first and third person narrative, and how different perspectives combine with different tenses. We will look at the possibilities of unusual points of view: how the second-person narrator plays with degrees of intimacy, and with power. How a communal, or choral ‘we’ narration might work; its reach and limitation. At fiction that makes use of a subjunctive or future tense, and how this might electrify your story. We’ll also look at how and where and why to shift point of view: so subtly that the reader barely notices, and so outrageously it shocks. You’ll go away with plenty of exercises to try, and games to play, to sharpen and electrify your prose, whatever stories you might be telling.

The masterclass will be delivered via Zoom and will last two hours (11:00 – 13:00) including time for you to write. You will need to have a computer or smart device and a reliable internet connection in order to participate. This is a live event only and it will not be recorded.

As part of our wider effort to increase participation in the arts, concessionary places are available for this session.

Cost: £35 (concession: £17.50)

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."

"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
