Arvon at Home Masterclass: The Art of the Pitch and Proposal

Zoom masterclass with Janine Giovanni

Thursday April 8th 2021, 11:00am GMT

This masterclass will leave you with more knowledge than when you started and importantly, you will take away the bones of a pitch and proposal for your own writing project. We’ll also have some fun along the way!

What is a pitch? Why is it important? How many ways you can pitch the same book? How can you possibly distil your project into a few words? We will do some short exercises along the way to get you into a pitching frame of mind and starting to think about your own project. And this will extend to the proposal: Who is it for? What do you put in? What do you leave out? Understand where your book sits in the market, why it is similar to other books and why it is different. Communicate who you are as a writer, why you have written your book and why an agent or publisher should be interested in you. We will do some short exercises to help you think about your own writing projects in each of these areas.

And, finally, the agent letter – some top tips about length, tone and content.

The masterclass will be delivered via Zoom and will last two hours (11:00am – 13:00pm) including time for you to write. You will need to have a computer or smart device and a reliable internet connection in order to participate.

Please note: this session will be recorded.  Bookers unable to join the live session will be able to view this event for up to seven days after it has happened. "These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."

—Masterclass participant

"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
