Arvon at Home Masterclass: Think like a publisher/Don’t think like a publisher

Zoom masterclass with author Max Porter

Thursday January 21st 2021, 11:00am BST

Online

Our writing houses may be temporarily closed, but Arvon remains very much open: to helping people make space for creativity and to connecting them with the finest writing tutors. For the first time, Arvon is bringing its celebrated writing workshops online.

Arvon at Home Masterclass: Think like a publisher/Don’t, whatever you do, think like a publisher

This masterclass will propose two very different approaches to writing a fiction work in progress.

The first half will encourage writers to consider the techniques and sensibilities of a modern publishing house and bring them to bear on their work in progress. From editorial processes (structural editing, line work, copy-editing) to marketing (how does this book fit, or not, into the commercial landscape) and publicity (how and to whom will this book be pitched), arming writers with a fuller understanding of the processes and mindsets involved. It will be candid, realistic and myth-debunking.

The second half of the masterclass will be about the importance of ignoring, forgetting, actively resisting or manipulating for your own benefit the insights of the first half. It will be about ideas, creativity, blissful or generative ignorance, rule-breaking, freedom and growth. It will be honest, vulnerable and inspiring.

The masterclass will be delivered via Zoom and will last two hours (11:00am – 13:00pm) including time for you to write. You will need to have a computer or smart device and a reliable internet connection in order to participate. This is a live event only and it will not be recorded.

COURSE TUTOR

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."

—Masterclass participant

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."

—Masterclass participant

"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
