Arvon at Home Masterclass: Titles, or the Ajar Door

Zoom masterclass with Rachel Long

Tuesday March 23rd 2021, 19:00pm GMT

Online

This masterclass will leave you with more knowledge than when you started and importantly, you will take away the bones of a pitch and proposal for your own writing project. We’ll also have some fun along the way!

“I’m terrible at titles!” is one of the most common things we hear writers say — in workshops, in conversation, even on stage.
Landing on a good title is hard work. You would think that all the hard work was done once you’d finished your poem, short story, play, novel, but then you have to go all the way back to the beginning and decide on a word or group of words that can frame, encompass and illuminate the whole thing.
So, how does one choose a title that will make a browsing reader or audience go, oooh? How do we know if our titles are giving too much away, or being too abstruse? In this masterclass we’ll have fun trying different titles on for size, finding out what our title type is, and learning to locate ‘the heart’ within our writing.

The masterclass will be delivered via Zoom and will last two hours (19:00pm – 21:00pm) including time for you to write. You will need to have a computer or smart device and a reliable internet connection in order to participate. This is a live event only and it will not be recorded.

There are limited number of grants available for people on low-income. These are allocated on a first come first served basis. Please contact communications@arvon.org to apply.

Cost: £35

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."

—Masterclass participant

"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
