Arvon at Home Masterclass: Writing for Performance with Communities

Zoom masterclass with Francesca Beard & Sara Clifford

Tuesday January 11th 2022, 19:00 GMT

Are you a writer, performer or theatre maker who is currently working, or looking to work, with communities? Do you believe writing and self-expression can promote positive social change? Are you interested in developing your individual personal creative process and exploring how you can open it up to work within communities?

Join experienced and inspirational tutors Francesca Beard and Sara Clifford as they share techniques that will be rooted in exercises covering:

  • Placemaking theatre
  • Creating work with communities rooted in a site or location
  • Telling local stories that resonate for the community
  • Good practice models of co-creation and facilitation
  • Developing creative processes that support your own practice as well as the communities you work with to share voice, tell stories and ask questions.

There will be time for questions at the end of the session. All welcome – you can be experienced, or just starting out – you may have made work with community groups before, or be interested to find out more.

The masterclass will be delivered via Zoom and will last two hours (19:00 – 21:00) including time for you to write. You will need to have a computer or smart device and a reliable internet connection in order to participate. Bookers unable to join the live session will be able to view this Arvon Masterclass for up to two weeks after the event. You must book your place before the event starts in order to access this facility.

As part of our wider effort to increase participation in the arts, half-price concessions are available for this course at checkout. There are a limited number of free subsidised places for those who cannot afford the concession price.

Cost: £35 (concession: £17.50)

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."

—Masterclass participant

"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
