To Be a Hug For S: An LGBT+ History Month Workshop

(recommended age: 12-14)

It’s fair to say 2020 probably wasn’t the year any of us expected. As we dust ourselves off, with new working environments and home arrangements springing up around us, we find ourselves navigating a world that feels familiar yet also markedly different. The impact of these changes seems to be especially acute for young people, and our new Arvon at Home Workshops for Children and Young People are designed with this in mind. They offer online opportunities for creativity and self-expression, outside the curriculum, for young people aged 8 upwards, whether from their own home or in a school classroom, under the guidance of expert tutors in poetry and prose.

This workshop webinar is brought to you by the acclaimed poet Caleb Parkin. Whether with a parent, friend, co-worker, or partner, there’s no getting away from relationships. Poetry’s the perfect place to explore them, in all their beautiful and troublesome glory. Writing about relationships can help us reflect on the ways we connect, or sometimes disconnect, with important people (and animals, places and objects) in our lives.

Inspired by LGBT+ History Month, we’ll use our unique and sparkling words as acts of generosity. This one-hour workshop of carefully structured activities uses metaphor to explore how we might offer people in our lives what they need.

Caleb Parkin is Bristol City Poet, published widely in magazines, journals, and through commissioned poems. He tutors for Poetry Society, Poetry School and First Story and holds an MSc in Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes. His debut pamphlet, Wasted Rainbow, and first full collection, This Fruiting Body, are both published in 2021.
