Arvon at Home Writing Weekend: Poetry

On Shame

Friday February 4th - Sunday February 6th 2022, 18:00 GMT

What exactly does your shame feel like? Emily Dickinson felt hers as a skin, ‘shawl of Pink’, and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick felt hers was denoted by blushing, and Selima Hill reimagined hers as a ‘white balloon’ that followed her ‘from room to dusty room’. In this course with Rachel Long and Richard Scott we’ll be getting up close and personal to our shame — through close reading, discussions, examination of theory and a series of sensitive writing exercises — and asking it to identify itself. After all, what has been deemed shameful and has been hidden for so long, might just make for excellent poetry . . .

We’ll help you to make ‘Arvon at Home’, turning your own place into a writing cocoon, capturing the transformative power of our acclaimed Arvon residential courses: two brilliant author-tutors at your service, a caring and sharing group, the time and space to devote to your writing, invaluable feedback, new writing pals, and the unique creative progress that happens over a dedicated weekend.

The Arvon Writing Weekends are for those writers whose lives don’t allow an entire week off. Longer than  a Masterclass, shorter than a Writing Week, they are are deep-dives into craft presenting time to write, re-make, and experiment. Over three days, you will explore your words and ideas in a series of interactive workshops, and fine-tune them in focused tutorials with your tutors. Your pages will grow, and so will you as a writer.

All gatherings, one-to-one or group, will be delivered via our own Arvon Zoom, so you’ll need to have a reliable internet connection. Your Arvon host will be on call to offer support as you need it, including any help you may need with your computer set-up.

As part of our wider effort to increase participation in the arts, there are a limited number of concessionary places available for this course.

This event is part of Rachel Long’s Spring 2022 Residency with Arvon. To see all upcoming events in the program please click here.
