Date Sunday October 30th 2022
Location Hebden Bridge Town Hall

This spooky writing day will help you to explore how you can use the gothic and uncanny in your work. Whether you’re working on a novel or short story, or just starting out as a writer, you will find out how gothic narratives enrich genres from historical fiction to thriller to folk horror and more.

Join Natasha Pulley and Beth Underdown – tutors experienced in gothic forms spanning witchcraft tales, haunted houses and nuclear noir – you’ll explore how the uncanny functions in literature. Get tips on how to write fear, build suspense, and release the demons into your prose.  The workshops will help you find the darkness in your characters and settings and illuminate the knotty plots and themes at your disposal.

Price: £75

Concessions: £37.50

We will provide a sandwich lunch and tea, coffee, and water throughout the day.

Hebden Bridge Town Hall is a fully accessible venue in the centre of the town, approximately 10 minutes’ walk from Hebden Bridge train station (accessible lift option available on request) with direct links to Manchester and Leeds. Parking is available within the town centre. For more information:

This course was so inspiring, we covered so much ground in a short amount of time.

There's nothing quite like an Arvon course: that feeling of learning, of discovering new things about yourself and the people you meet along the way.

It was great to meet other writers and forge connections. It was insightful to hear directly from established authors and poets about their practice and influences in an approachable and intimate space.
