Masterclass: Life Writing
Constructing the Real
So many novelists struggle with the mechanics of plot and narrative structure: how do you piece a book together into a coherent whole? Does that even exist as a concept? How do you work out the mechanics of moving a story along or, at the most fundamental level, make a reader want to turn the page? Huge numbers of novels feel sluggish in their early pages, and as a reader you can sit there waiting for the story to start. Many novelists also struggle with what is known as the ‘muddled middle’, when the book you are writing can come to feel like quicksand. And that’s before we even talk about endings. Just how many novels fail to follow through or fall flat in the final pages? In this Masterclass, Louise Doughty will take you through the basics of narrative structure, using screenwriting models to talk about plot paradigms and how novelists can learn a lesson or two from drama writers. She will also talk about troubleshooting, and what to do when you get stuck or your story goes wrong. This is a session about the mechanics beneath a book, the invisible work that has to be done before you even get to constructing beautiful sentences. It is suitable for all levels of experience, because even the best novelists sometimes struggle with plot.
The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.
