Have you ever wondered how to incorporate comedy into your writing?

In this lively masterclass session with Emma Jane Unsworth, award-winning writer of novels such as Animals (‘Withnail with girls’, Caitlin Moran) and Adults (‘Heartbreaking and hilarious’, Dolly Alderton) as well as acclaimed comedy screenwriter, you’ll explore comedy formula and structure, and how to create characters who are both funny and convincing. You’ll look at how to add comedy as a flavour to your writing, and how viewing character through a comic lens might inform the choices you make in your fiction. You’ll learn how writers use devices such as irony and satire in order to make political ideas powerful and palatable, finding inspiration from a mixture of classic and contemporary fiction.

Emma will discuss a range of genres from memoir to drama, but with a focus particularly on fiction.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
