Masterclass: Hide and Seek: Child’s play and the poem

Zoom Masterclass with Victoria Kennefick
Tutor
  • Victoria Kennefick
Date Friday August 5th 2022, 11:00 - 13:00 BST
Location Online

Poet and teacher Victoria Kennefick presents a fun, surprising, and exploratory workshop, aimed at making poems by remembering the practice of play, and using the games of childhood to rediscover and recover what we might have hidden as children, and what we can now usefully seek as adults. Games help children work through anxieties and play out their deepest fears in relative safely. These ‘childish games’ can be thrilling and terrifying all at once, but they are always illuminating. Reading contemporary poetry and looking within ourselves with kindness and compassion, we can hold these difficult feelings and really observe them. Then, if we feel ready, transform them into something beautiful and spirited, constructed out of the imagery and language of our earliest experiences, and brought once more into the light to remind us of how far we’ve come and how we haven’t changed at all.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar (11:00-13:00), so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
