Residential Writing Course: Fiction
Drawing from myth and history
Across time, women’s association with – and, all too often, restriction within – the domestic space has functioned as a source of repression. However, the four walls of home might also transform into a site of subversion, creativity and political solidarity. In this Masterclass with AK Blakemore, an award-winning author of historical fiction, you will examine the ways in which writers, from Charlotte Perkins Gilman to Olga Ravn, have depicted the ‘women’s work’ of social reproduction, and the rich potentialities for both horror and wonder of the historical homestead as a setting for fiction.
You will take part in exercises which will help to deepen your consideration of the textures of life and work for women, and provoke thought about how they might have interacted with the spaces they inhabited, and the women, children and animals they inhabited them alongside. You will consider how to depict, through fiction, historical domestic spaces with authenticity, originality and flair.
Is this session for me?
Our masterclasses are regularly attended by writers who:
What will I gain?
How does it work?
The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. You can contribute via the chatbox with your tutor and other writers attending the session. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording afterwards. Masterclasses can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Just translate the UK time to your local time zone.
