Date Tuesday August 16th 2022, 19:00 - 21:00 BST
Location Online

History offers a wealth of inspiration for novelists but how do writers create compelling historical characters and rich, authentic worlds for them to inhabit? In this two-hour masterclass, novelist and writing coach Katherine Clements delves into the unique challenges of writing fiction set in the past. Katherine will address the questions she’s asked most often as a teacher and mentor specialising in historical novels. You’ll discover the key things to consider including how to approach real historical figures; how to tackle historical dialogue; how to create believable historical settings and how to find the right balance between historical fact and fiction. Full of practical advice, writing exercises to get your imagination flowing and the chance to ask questions, this workshop will leave you inspired and more confident to bring the past to life.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar (19:00-21:00), so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
