Masterclass: Telling Other People’s Stories
Getting to the truth

In this workshop, you will be guided by award-winning novelist and short-story writer Fiona Mozley in starting, and finishing, a novel of your own. You will learn how to begin: how to take that germ of an idea and put it on the page. You will be given an overview of different kinds of structures, and how to manage ‘middles’. You will think about characters and settings and how they work together to transport the reader. Finally, Fiona will offer you a sense of how to pull the strands of your story together and write an ending. Along the way, you will be presented with examples of classic and contemporary texts, and engaged by writing exercises. So whatever stage you’re at – the starting blocks or the finish line – after just two hours you will come away better equipped with the tools you need to bring your novel to fruition.

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."— Masterclass participant
"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."— Masterclass participant
