Masterclass: Telling Other People’s Stories
Getting to the truth

There is no single way to write a novel.
Each writer’s process, each book, is unique. The only universal is that no book can exist successfully on the page if it does not exist strongly in the mind of its author. Whether we begin by writing 1500 pages longhand or sticking colour-coded index cards on the wall, everything we do has one goal: to create a vision. We are building worlds, first in the mind, then on the page, then better on the page, until we have a book. The inner world must be compelling, it must compel the writer to tell the story. I have had six novels published over fifteen years, lucky enough to be well-reviewed – even, sometimes, prize-winning and bestselling – and I’ve had the further good fortune to adapt my work for the screen, but every piece of good fortune has its twin in disappointment or failure.
As writers, we encounter every form of resistance from all sides, not least in ourselves. Writers are plagued by doubt, getting stuck on story, theme, character, and style – it’s easy to get lost in the effort and forget that writing a book is an act of imagination. Whether you are at the start of the process or deep in edits, this Masterclass aims to help you enrich the world of your book and make it full of life enough to solve its own problems.

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."— Masterclass participant
"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."— Masterclass participant
