Are you drawn to the water’s edge? Are you a sea swimmer, beachcomber, surfer or shell collector? Or are you just fascinated by the ocean and those who explore, plunge into and take comfort from it? In this masterclass we’ll look at different ways to think and write about the sea. Wyl Menmuir, author of the bestselling non-fiction title The Draw of The Sea and recipient of the Roger Deakin Award for nature writing, will guide you through a series of practical approaches for writing about our many relationships with the sea. Drawing on prose and poetry, we will explore possibilities for your own original writing about the watery places to which we have been pulled back since the beginning of time and which continue to intrigue and fascinate, terrify and console. Please bring with you a photograph of a favourite section of coastline or of a coastal activity you want to explore in writing or a small artefact (think shells, pieces of driftwood, sea beans or ocean plastics). As part of the session we’ll be writing about a place that is particularly important to you.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
