Masterclass: Poems of Playfulness and Delight

Masterclass: Poems of Playfulness and Delight

Zoom Masterclass with Claudine Toutoungi
  • Claudine Toutoungi
Date Friday September 30th 2022, 11:00 - 13:00 BST
Location Online

The poet Jack Gilbert in his poem A Brief For The Défense writes ‘We can do without pleasure but not delight.’

In this workshop we will explore ways to inject delight and playfulness into our poems. How can we pivot in a time of global crisis and use our fears and paranoias to fuel new, surprising poems that might, without turning a blind eye to the world’s troubles, perform a tap dance amongst the rubble? Using automatic writing techniques to access our subliminal drives and a medley of contempered poets to inspire us, we will set off down the road to delight, making detours along the way to explore how sound patterns, the pleasure of refrain, tonal mash-ups, linguistic disruptions and dream logic can all help explode our old writing habits and unlock new and deliciously unpredictable poems.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar (11:00-13:00), so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
