If the past is another country, how do we transport our readers there? To evoke worlds different from our own is the task of authors across genres, but this masterclass addresses the challenges specific to historical fiction while giving you a toolkit you can take anywhere.

Imogen Hermes Gowar is the author of novels set in the 15th and 18th centuries. She believes that historical fiction authors enjoy a unique privilege: the ability to step into the void between factual authenticity and creative expression. In this masterclass she’ll explore how writers can inhabit the past on a sensory and emotional level, creating characters who feel convincingly of their era. She’ll address a writer’s responsibilities when they bring historical figures or events into contemporary storytelling, offering guidance on where to begin with research, and how to incorporate it seamlessly into fiction narratives.

History can and should provoke great literary storytelling, and this masterclass is designed to help you do so, boldly and with confidence.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
