The popular image of poets tends towards tortured souls, malaise and ennui. While poetry is a reflective practice – that doesn’t exclude joy. Far from it. Aside from external factors people associate with ‘happiness’, the curious, playful, connective practice of poetry can foster a deeper joy in our creative and broader lives. Award-winning poet Caleb Parkin leads this masterclass on the poetry of joy. You will rediscover the joy of playing with words, energetically and without expectation, embracing the squishy, delicious medium of language.

You will focus on where joy resides in our bodies, how we conceive of it through our senses, and the forms of expression that can arise when we pay attention to physicality. Exploring poems that focus on the embodied and sensuous, Caleb will then turn your attention to our collective effervescence – how joy is communicated and shared. And then, extending this outward, to human and nonhuman communities. Expect a diverse range of approaches and voices, in poems and activities that unpack and then amplify joy, from individual words into whole worlds.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
