Masterclass: Read like a Writer

Zoom Masterclass with Guy Gunaratne
Tutor
  • Guy Gunaratne
Date Friday July 14th 2023, 11:00 - 13:00 BST
Location Online

All writers were readers first, and all writing can be seen as a conversation between writers and readers past and present. What does that conversation sound like? This masterclass with author Guy Gunaratne will focus on developing an approach to reading fiction and non-fiction – reading hungrily, variedly, voraciously and with pleasure – using a framework for developing sensitivities that will leave writers thinking: if that is what came before, and this is what is in the air today, what could come next? Tying threads between an eclectic list of novelists, poets, and playwrights such as Ali Smith, Charles Dickens, Caryl Churchill, Virginia Woolf and James Baldwin (with asides from the likes of Terry Eagleton, George Steiner and Margurite Duras) this will be a leap into literature that will help jumpstart a sustained practice of reading as a writer.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar (11:00-13:00), so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded, so if you are unable to attend live you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
