When I sit down to write a book, I do not say to myself, ‘I am going to produce a work of art.’ I write it because there is some lie that I want to expose, some fact to which I want to draw attention, and my initial concern is to get a hearing.
George Orwell

Journalists and non-fiction writers are regularly entrusted with other people’s most valued possession: their story. But how to tell it right? In this Masterclass Peter Apps, author of the Orwell Prize-winning Show Me The Bodies and the forthcoming Homesick: How Housing Broke London and How to Fix It will guide you through the challenging, essential process of telling other people’s stories.

Whether you’re writing political polemic or a more intimate personal account, you will learn the tools to tell people’s stories in a truthful, emotive and engaging way, from approaching subjects for interviews, to getting the most out of the interview itself, and what comes next. We will also cover the key ethical questions that naturally arise, from copy approval and payment to dealing with traumatic subject matter and privacy.

The session is run in conjunction with The Orwell Prize for Reporting Homelessness. We are offering 20 free places to individuals who have submitted work for The Orwell Prize for Reporting Homelessness. To take up one of these places, please complete this form. In the event of demand exceeding supply, priority will be given to entrants who are unpublished and those with lived experience of homelessness, in all its forms. Please let us know if either of these apply. For those who secure a place, we will send a booking confirmation.

“George Orwell’s vivid reportage on homelessness and poverty combines evidence with empathy, describing the root causes and their brutal impact. The Orwell Prize for Reporting Homelessness celebrates the best writing on the subject but, in addition to our brilliant Prize winners, we believe there is further untapped potential among unpublished writers. That includes those with lived experience of homelessness. That’s why we are excited to be partnering with Arvon, who can give successful Prize entrants world-class mentoring and training, with the aim of creating a pipeline of new, authentic and authoritative, writers on homelessness.”
Liz Wallace, Deputy Director, The Orwell Foundation

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."
— Masterclass participant
"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
