Masterclass: The Facts of Fiction

The devil is in the detail
  • Colum McCann
Date Tuesday August 6th 2024, 19:00-21:00 BST
Location Online

How do writers use research as an effective foundation for the work of the imagination to build upon? How can they avoid hindering their work with too-close adherence to facts and instead be truthful and specific enough to bring a story to vivid and convincing life? Join Colum McCann, prize-winning author of seven novels and three story collections, for a masterclass that delves into the details. He’ll examine the choices fiction writers make in terms of narration – whether first person and third person narratives have fundamentally different structures, for example – and illustrate how you can deal with the passage of time without endless passages of exposition. He’ll explore what responsibilities fiction writers bear in terms of historical accuracy, and how to know when you’re ready to move from information-gathering to the craft of creation. He’ll also offer solutions to the cul-de-sacs that we as writers find ourselves in from time to time. Whether you have a work of fiction in progress, or you’re embarking on a new project, this two-hour interactive session will offer inspiration and practical advice to kickstart the process.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
