Masterclass: Economy in Poetry
How to deploy economy in poetry to pack a big punch

The line break separates poetry from prose. In prose, the line-break is random. In poetry, it is a charge-point. It is the holder of power. It is the most powerful of devices. It is the point at which notes are struck and resonate. When the wrong word is exposed at the end of the line, and its bad acoustics emphasised, poems can be ruined. The line break works in conjunction with enjambment. The line-break is a threshold. The line break is a precipice. It is the point at which the line confronts the vastnesses of white space. Put an em dash after it, and it’s a leap into nothingness— There are many different ways of successfully using the line-break. In this masterclass, we will look at all of them. When the line-break doesn’t work properly, when it fails to operate as part of a system, the energy is lost. When the energy is lost, so is the intensity. When the intensity is lost, so is the poem. In this Masterclass, you’ll be encouraged to revisit, interrogate and challenge the ways in which you break the line in your poems and will leave with an enhanced understanding of the available options.
Is this session for me?
Our masterclasses are regularly attended by writers who:
What will I gain?
How does it work?
The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. You can contribute via the chatbox with your tutor and other writers attending the session. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording afterwards. Masterclasses can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Just translate the UK time to your local time zone.

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."— Masterclass participant
"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."— Masterclass participant
