Working Towards a Pamphlet

Date Monday August 28th - Monday September 25th 2023
Location Online

Following a soldout course earlier in the year, Helen Mort and John McCullough return to Arvon at Home, helping you shape your poems into a pamphlet in evening sessions over the course of five weeks. Helen and John will guide you as you structure your work into a coherent whole. You will examine the changing nature of publishing, as well as the range of poetry publishers to which you might submit. You’ll think about how to assemble poems so that they reinforce each other, considering organizing principles such as subject matter and form. You will be encouraged to explore themed pamphlets, as well as those containing narrative arcs and sequences. You will also discover the effects of a variety of poetic devices, techniques and structures, both traditional and experimental. During the course, you’ll share poems, you’ll consider how different poems of yours might go together and, through a series of exercises, you’ll be encouraged to create new pieces too. By the end, you’ll have a strong sense of avenues to follow to construct a pamphlet and of the publishers you might pitch to when seeking publication.
