To be able to connect with place, it is not possible to ignore the body that carries you there, that arrives and that journeys through, however that might happen. It is impossible to ignore the human and non-human communities your body is connected to just by living. For those who live in and with bodies marginalised by society, the experience of place is different from what dominant cultures portray.

In this online course, Khairani Barokka and Louise Kenward will facilitate a series of workshops and readings enabling you to consider your own body and its presence in the world. You’ll look at how to represent it in language and how it connects to the places you visit, inhabit, come from in your veins, are connected to, and travel to. Together, you’ll explore the places we live in, places that make up our histories and those that sustain our lives, through prose, poetry and all things in between.

During workshops you will look at the role of narratives and storytelling about our bodies and place in a way that aims to honour both. Through writing exercises, discussion, readings, and reflecting on what it is like to inhabit a (your) body, you will generate new writing and creative skills and new ways of thinking about existing projects you may have. You will learn from the facilitators’ experiences of writing and editing work relating to bodies and place, and have the chance to explore new writers’ work and multiple forms and structures of work on bodies and place writing. This course is based on disability justice as essential to socioenvironmental justice.
