Residential Writing Course: Fiction
Drawing from myth and history
If some friendly publisher told you that you can write anything at all, however wild or strange, and it will be published (beautifully, expensively) what would you write? Is there, behind the work you have been doing, another kind of work, more engaged with your true interests, more tangled up with the deep structures of ‘you’? One of the key reasons people give up on their writing is that their writing simply does not interest them. This immersive and interactive writing day led by award-winning novelist Andrew Miller will attempt to return you to a sense of play and exploration in writing.
Over the course of the day Andrew will encourage you to let go of assumptions about ‘good’ writing and rediscover the emotion of possibility that precedes all creative uses of language.
• Should writing be ‘smooth’? What if it’s awkward?
• Should sentences make sense? Should novels?
• Must a story always be ‘about’ something?
There will be lots of short bursts of writing throughout the day (please work with paper rather than a screen). There will be chats, discussions, sharing of work (though no one will be put on the spot. Always ok to say ‘pass’.) We will look at/listen to some examples of writing on the wild side.
The day is aimed at no particular kind of writer and no particular level of experience. Short story writers, novelists, screen writers, song writers, poets, and none of the above, are all welcome.
Is this course for me?
