Residential Writing Course: Poetry and Memoir
Truth and lyricism
It’s easy to think of yourself as a certain ‘type’ of writer. Whether you’re working on your first piece or you’ve been at it for years, you form an idea of the thing you do, and your strengths and preferences. You repeat yourself. You fall back on what you know works.
This is a course for challenging those ideas. Join Chris Thorpe and Rachel Mars for a course that will look at who you are as a writer and the pieces you’re currently working on – anything from a full draft to a vague idea – in new ways. Over the month, you’ll ask questions about the forms you use, the relationship of your work to the audience, and how you can widen the way you see yourself as a writer. Bring existing work to look at with fresh eyes, or if you’re in between projects or a beginner, just bring an open mind to try new ideas. This is a course for all levels of experience.
Please see the detailed course timetable here.
Is this course for me?
Our month-long courses are aimed at writers who have a specific goal in mind for the month. This might be to begin their writing journey, to make progress on a work-in-progress, or to kickstart a commitment to their writing going forward.
These courses are often attended by writers who:
What will I gain?
How does it work?
The month kicks off with an introductory session to get to know you and to ensure we meet your individual writing needs, as well as the chance to meet the other writers in the group. Then each week for the next month there will be evening workshops on Tuesdays designed to move you and your writing forward. You will also be offered one-to-one tutorials with each tutor + a free pass to all readings and masterclasses happening elsewhere at Arvon at Home.
A more detailed timetable can be found here.

‘For anyone deciding whether to attend one of Arvon’s courses, here’s my advice: Do it. The month long course was brilliant. You’ll receive constructive feedback on your work from your tutors and the other participants. At the end of the month, you’ll be inspired to write more and on top of that, you’ll have a new writing community to support you going forward. Arvon are excellent.’ —Rose—
