Masterclass: Economy in Poetry
How to deploy economy in poetry to pack a big punch

Back due to popular demand!
‘You took a lamp and you open the door / What use is a lamp, it is raining, the day breaks.’ – Galway Kinnell
“this is all true but contains no facts” – Caroline Bird
What does it mean to tell the ‘truth’ in a poem? How far do you dare to go in your own work? Using Kinnell’s declaration, ‘What use is a lamp’ as a question – and through close reading of a wide variety of texts, generative exercises, and focused discussion – this course will illuminate the unexplored corners of your creative expression.
Join award-winning poets Rachel Long and Victoria Kennefick for this invigorating and rejuvenating poetry writing month, which will motivate and support you to move beyond your comfort zone and explore new and unexpected themes, forms, and approaches to your writing. You will interrogate what truth is and can be – factually, emotionally, and poetically.
You’ll play with how truth can be distorted, enhanced, and framed. You’ll shine a light on new corners of your practice, and by the end the course will have a new batch of poems that both reveal what may have previously felt hidden to you, and serve to guide and challenge your future writing.
Please note, due to a large waiting list, this is a re-run of the Truth or Dare Online Writing Month that Rachel and Victoria ran in January 2025. Rachel and Victoria will be running a ‘part two’ version of this course at a later date in 2026.
Is this course for me?
Our month-long courses are aimed at writers who have a specific goal in mind for the month. This might be to begin their writing journey, to make progress on a work-in-progress, or to kickstart a commitment to their writing going forward.
These courses are often attended by writers who:
What will I gain?
How does it work?
The month kicks off with an introductory session to get to know you and to ensure we meet your individual writing needs, as well as the chance to meet the other writers in the group. Then each week for the next month there will be evening workshops on Tuesdays designed to move you and your writing forward. You will also be offered one-to-one tutorials with each tutor + a free pass to all readings and masterclasses happening elsewhere at Arvon at Home.
A more detailed timetable can be found below.
