Online Writing Week: Writing Relationships in Poetry
Wild and wondrous ways of writing love

There are thousands upon thousands of disability cultures and indigeneities in the world, and disabled people are the world’s largest minority – we are a population of resistance, abundance and plural histories of creativity. In this course, we work from a perspective of disability justice, as coined by the group Sins Invalid, that recognises these resistances.
We will learn how to communicate our experiences of bodyminds glorious in their divergences from the normative, joys and self-affirmation alongside pain, fatigue, isolation, or stigma, and then mould these moments into innovative new work. Alongside workshops and tutorials, we will also be teaching concepts and ideas from Disability Studies to recontextualise your creative process and understand how aspects of your identity and lived experience can be investigated to generate extraordinary creative responses (we welcome multimodal work). Through a series of workshops, tutorials, prompts, and readings, we will be exploring your relationships to language. We’ll work on potential reflections of your lives in form, creative exercises that encourage you to explore further possibilities, and one-to-one feedback sessions to really delve deep into your individual practices.
We welcome anyone who identifies as disabled, D/deaf, chronically ill, and/or neurodiverse, providing a safe and flexible environment for us all to fully explore our creativity in a group. There are unlimited concessions available for this course. If the concession rate is not accessible to you, please email eliza.squire@arvon.org to enquire about any extra funding opportunities. The course will have BSL interpretation, autocaptioning and transcripts. All images and videos will be audio described and all texts shared in advance. Writers are encouraged to participate in whatever way is most accessible to them, e.g. with cameras on or off, verbally, or via the chatbox. This course is presented as part of Daniel Sluman’s 2025 virtual residency with Arvon.
Is this course for me?
Our month-long courses are aimed at writers who have a specific goal in mind for the month. This might be to begin their writing journey, to make progress on a work-in-progress, or to kickstart a commitment to their writing going forward.
These courses are often attended by writers who:
What will I gain?
How does it work?
The month kicks off with an introductory session to get to know you and to ensure we meet your individual writing needs, as well as the chance to meet the other writers in the group. Then each week for the next month there will be evening workshops on Tuesdays designed to move you and your writing forward. You will also be offered one-to-one tutorials with each tutor + a free pass to all readings and masterclasses happening elsewhere at Arvon at Home.
A more detailed timetable can be found below.
