The poems only you can write

Monday May 4th - Saturday May 9th 2020

The Hurst

‘The role, the rise, the carol, the creation’ (Gerard Manley Hopkins). Writing poetry is a joy, but sometimes our fires need feeding. Through detailed, sympathetic and challenging responses to your current work, we will help you rediscover the absorbing pleasures of developing and honing the poems that only you can write. We expect you to be productive, to have fun, and to surprise yourself and us – all in the glorious setting of the house and grounds of The Hurst. There will be space and time galore for uninterrupted writing, as well as optional short daily bursts of creative reading to spur you on. Participants are invited to send three or four sample poems for us to read in advance (not more than 120 lines in total) to thehurst@arvon.org by Friday 3 April.

Single room price: £850

The Hurst

The Hurst is a place you can write, far away from daily distractions. The house and gardens, surrounded by the forest-covered Shropshire Hills, were the former home of playwright John Osborne.

What is a Tutored Retreat?

Tutored retreats are for more experienced writers, not beginners. The focus is on space to progress with your current work, plus in-depth support from two tutors available for one-to-one tutorials. Unlike our normal open courses, there are no workshops. Instead you will have four one-to-one tutorials, two with each tutor, as opposed to two on normal courses. A mid-week guest will read on Wednesday. On the last day you will all share your writing with a celebratory reading in the evening.
