The Black Poets Masterclass Showcase

The Black Poets Masterclass Showcase

A reading and celebration of Black poetry as part of Arvon's 2023/24 Black Poets Masterclass Series
Date Wednesday February 28th 2024, 19:15 - 20:15 GMT
Location Online

Join Arvon and The Obsdian Foundation as we celebrate the culmination of the Black Poets Masterclass Series 2023/24!

Having spent the last year delivering Masterclasses that delved into the rich canon of Black poetry from Africa, the Caribbean, the US and UK, join poets Dzifa Benson, Anthony Joseph, Karen McCarthy Woolf and Jason Allen-Paisant for this showcase in which they’ll read from their work and reflect on Black poetry as whole.

In a wide-ranging discussion and Q&A with poet and Obsidian founder Nick Makoha, expect to hear new cuts, old cuts, with some surprises along the way.

This event is free so bring yourself, your friends and your questions!

“Archiving literature from the African diaspora and guarding it against erasure is a moral responsibility for people in our position so I’m so proud Arvon was able to team up with The Obsidian Foundation to deliver these Masterclasses. It’s been such an honour hosting these sessions. And going forward, I can tell you this is just the start for the Black Poets Masterclass Series!”

– Okala Elesia, Arvon’s Acting Head of Communications and Marketing

This session will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

I feel much more confident about short stories now! In such a short time I feel I was given such a great overview and the reader/tutor was so generous with their feedback and knowledge.

Very lovely. It had an intimate feeling despite it being a Zoom event and all of us being in different places.
