Masterclass: Screenwriting
Develop a compelling thriller for the screen

Leave the world behind and escape to The Hurst for a week of putting your writing first. Give your current project (or something new entirely) the time and focus it needs, whatever stage your project is at, with all day to yourself and near-infinite supplies of tea and cake on hand. When you’re in need of a break, take a walk in the gorgeous Shropshire countryside or curl up in one of the house’s many cosy nooks and read your favourite book. Then spend the evenings with like-minded people for dinner and lively discussion. An untutored writing retreat is all about you. There are no tutors or midweek guests; no distractions but the occasional owl. Apart from shared meal times, your days are yours to structure as you see fit.
The House
The Hurst, situated in the Shropshire countryside, is the former home of playwright John Osborne. Built in the 19th century, the building and gardens have been given a thoroughly 21st-century renovation. All bedrooms have a single bed and en-suite bathroom. The main workshop room has a hand-crafted table for twenty and a growing library, while a lift gives accessibility to every bedroom. The centre staff are here to look after you and make your stay enjoyable and comfortable. The grounds boast redwoods and wild orchids, is surrounded by the forest-covered Shropshire Hills, and was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The house sits within 26 acres of woodland, with a spring-fed lake and inspiring walks.
All rooms are single occupancy and your options are:

“I arrived at the beginning of the week wondering whether I might be a writer or even if I could write. But when I left, not only did I feel I could write, I knew that’s what I was going to do next.”— Piers Torday
“It is invaluable to writers at an early stage to have this feedback on their work. Many people on my course said that they wished that they had received this type of input earlier in their career – that it might have borne fruit and improved their success. It also provides time to think – in an over complicated world it is hard to carve time for yourself against the requirements of work, family, and daily chores. Arvon was a breath of fresh creative air.”— Penny Clark
“Both courses I attended have had a massive impact on my writing, and been part of the motivation and encouragement I needed to begin working professionally as a writer.”— Participant, Residential Writing Week
