Writers’ Retreat at Lumb Bank

The Barn

Monday December 7th - Sunday December 13th 2020

Lumb Bank

Give your writing the time and space it deserves on a six day Writers’ Retreat at Lumb Bank . This is an opportunity to spend time away from the stresses and strains of daily life, surrounded by nature.  Our retreats are offered in Covid-secure environments and are fully catered, leaving you more time to sit at your desk and write, or walk in the beautiful landscape. Whether you are starting something new, or pushing on to finish your latest draft, make time to free your imagination.

Lumb Bank is an 18th-century millowner’s house in West Yorkshire which once belonged to Ted Hughes. It’s set in 20 acres of steep woodland, with breathtaking views to the valley below – a Pennine landscape of woods and rivers, weavers’ cottages, packhorse trails and ruins of old mills. It is half a mile from the historic village of Heptonstall and two miles from Hebden Bridge. Lumb Bank’s terraced gardens offer spectacular views of the wooded valley, Lumb Chimneys and Colden Clough.

You will get a single bedroom in the barn building, adjacent to the main house, accessed across the courtyard. The barn bedrooms have single beds, en-suite private bathrooms, a separate private study room with writing desk, lounge chair and tea making facilities. The views in these rooms are more limited, but both study rooms open on to the garden terrace with valley views. There is a maximum of two rooms available on each retreat.

£725 per person for six nights.

Our retreats are fully catered, with home-cooked meals made from fresh produce.  Writers are not required to undertake any cooking or washing up all week, meaning more time to write. Meals will be served to you in our large dining room in the main house.

You’ll have access to the large barn space with sofas and desks, well-stocked library, and cosy living room (some restrictions will apply to the communal spaces due to Covid measures).
A full refund will be available if the retreat has to be cancelled due to Covid rules. See booking terms and conditions.

  • Wi-Fi and 4G coverage available
  • Easy walks to the local historic village of Heptonstall with two pubs and local shops and to bustling, trendy Hebden Bridge with its array of independent shops, cafes and bars.
  • Miles of footpaths and historic packhorse trails to explore directly from the house in the breath-taking high Pennine landscape on our doorstep.
