Jerwood/Arvon Mentoring Scheme

What is the Jerwood/Arvon Mentoring Scheme:

The Jerwood/Arvon Mentoring Scheme, run in partnership with the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, takes on nine talented, emerging writers, who receive mentoring for one year by an established writer working in either Poetry, Fiction or Playwriting.

This is a unique opportunity to transform your writing practice. Over the course of the year you will benefit from dedicated support and guidance with your writing, two week-long residentials at an Arvon centre, additional industry advice, and the opportunity to expand your practice as part of a new media writing project.

Applications have now closed for the Jerwood/ Arvon Mentoring Scheme 2016/17. Scroll down to find out more about this years scheme.

The Jerwood/Arvon Mentoring Scheme is generously supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

About this year’s scheme:

Now in its seventh year, the recipients of the 2016/17 Jerwood/Arvon Mentoring Scheme will receive support via mentoring, writing time and professional development.

Mentoring on the 2016/17 programme are poet Mona Arshi, playwright Chris Thorpe and novelist Emma Jane Unsworth. These inspiring mentors will take on three writers each in their category, supporting and guiding them in their work over the course of the year, from a week of intensive workshops, to preparing their work for publication in a group anthology.

Writing time

In addition to ongoing mentoring, the beginning and end of the year are each marked by a week away at Totleigh Barton, our oldest Arvon centre, in the Devon countryside. Beginning with a tutored Masterclass Week in March 2016 with the three mentors, the year concludes with a Retreat Week without the mentors in February 2017. These weeks will provide the scheme’s mentees with the time and space to focus on their writing, away from their everyday lives.

Professional development

Throughout the year the mentees will be given a chance to take part in a new media writing project with a digital literature specialist and advice sessions with industry insiders.

The nine writers’ development over the year will culminate in an anthology of works, in print and e-book format, and a book launch at the Free Word Centre in London.
