Join us from the comfort of your sofa and listen to writers share their work, the stories behind their work, and invaluable writing advice directly from their own desk (or maybe the kitchen table). And the best part? At the end, you get to ask them questions about their words, pick their brains on craft, and learn more about the business of writing.

Caroline Bird is a poet and playwright. Her sixth collection, The Air Year, won the Forward Prize for Poetry 2020 and was shortlisted for the Costa Poetry Prize and the Polari Prize. Her previous collections include In These Days of Prohibition, which was shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award and the TS Eliot Prize for Poetry in 2017. Caroline’s latest play, Red Ellen, about the labour MP Ellen Wilkinson, was shortlisted for the 2021 George Devine Award. Caroline’s Selected Poems, Rookie, was published by Carcanet in Spring 2022 and her latest collection, Ambush at Still Lake, is forthcoming in June 2024.

She won a Cholmondeley Award in 2023.

This event is part of Inua Ellams’s 2024 Writer in Residency with Arvon.

I feel much more confident about short stories now! In such a short time I feel I was given such a great overview and the reader/tutor was so generous with their feedback and knowledge.

Very lovely. It had an intimate feeling despite it being a Zoom event and all of us being in different places.
