‘At a certain point you say to the woods, to the sea, to the mountains, the world, Now I am ready. Now I will stop and be wholly attentive.’ Annie Dillard, ‘Teaching a Stone to Talk’ (1981)

If you are ready, this Masterclass offers two hours to stop and learn new ways to listen to the landscapes in which we live, whether that might be eavesdropping on the gossip of a patch of grass or a sing-along with the sea. Led by award-winning poet Holly Corfield Carr, a series of close readings of ecopoetry and practical exercises will help tune your ear into both the wild and your own writing.

In a warm and supportive space for both beginners and more experienced writers, you will explore how poetry might listen to nonhuman languages and how, at a time of environmental crisis and extinction, poetry might also sit within its silences. You will leave the workshop with a new toolbox of techniques, ready to make your poems sing back to the world.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
