Masterclass: Shaping Your Non-Fiction

Masterclass: Shaping Your Non-Fiction

Creating new structures
  • Jessica J. Lee
Date Tuesday July 30th 2024, 19:00-21:00 BST
Location Online

Join award-winning writer, Jessica J Lee, to explore the tricky element of structure in nonfiction. Should we tackle a braided essay, a book in fragments, or something altogether more linear? During this masterclass, you’ll consider the possible structures your nonfiction work may take.

Using a range of exercises for mapping out your project’s shape, timeline, and tone, you’ll aim to find the right shape for any piece you may want to write. You can come with a work they’ve already begun writing and want to give a different shape to or can bring along an idea they haven’t yet begun writing or simply use one of the prompts offered on the day. You’ll l explore tactics for re-shaping work you’ve already written as well as planning structure from the ground up.

You’ll leave with new ideas and tools for how to shape to your nonfiction writing.

The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.

"These zoom opportunities are really helping to open my world and keep me inspired to write."

"Arvon at Home creates a model to participate in inspirational tutoring for writers, at a distance. The feeling of attending to my writing life in an excellent fashion, and still having a half-day for my work and caring responsibilities at home, felt like a good balance."
— Masterclass participant
"It was an absolutely brilliant session and very very useful. And it made me realise how much I’ve missed this kind of workshop because of having children and family that I can’t leave. Now we’re all in the same boat the online stuff is truly transformative."
