Masterclass: Nature Writing
Writing the wild
What is the creative connection between experiences and ideas, and how can we deploy our own memories and experiences when making new work? During this generative masterclass session – for writers of all levels – Simon Stephens will draw on his 25 years as a playwright, sharing writing exercises that he uses in his own work to produce fresh ideas. These exercises are based on an observation that, for Stephens, plays are created via the synthesis of five different types of experience. They will be the starting point of a consideration of broader questions about theatre, writing and creativity, from ‘What is the political function of drama in a time of ecological and economic collapse?’ to ‘What is Andrew Scott like?’. You’ll leave with a notebook full of prompts for new dramatic work, as well as a framework for how to develop your ideas further.
The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.
