Online Writing Week: Poetry
Poetry and its Hinterland
Poetry in many ways results from a well-judged balance between free expression and methods of controlling the line. The line is the lifeblood of the poem. The line without control runs the risk of chaos and the squandering of clarity and meaning. The repeated em dash, the slash, the double slash, and the use of white spaces to ‘punctuate’ a poem, to name but a few methods, have grown to be immensely popular.
Control of the line, however, is also about syntax, syllables and line-breaking, and we will explore these in relation to the wide range of possibilities when it comes to choosing an appropriate method of punctuation. In this Masterclass with award-winning poet Tim Liardet, you will be encouraged to consider these exciting ways of controlling the line and how you might experiment with them. You’ll leave with skills and understanding that can greatly improve your poems.
The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.
