Masterclass: Nature Writing
Writing the wild
As educators, how can we meet young writers where they are, leading them into writing in an inclusive, playful way? This practical workshop leads teachers and educators through activities with a reflection-in-action approach. As they are a huge concern for young people, nature and the environment are our starting points. You’ll be guided through an opening activity and explore the benefits of collective poem-making. Then, we’ll write individually, inspired by carefully selected short poems, and reflect on the invitations our poem choices might facilitate for young writers. We will consider the selection of creative activities, timescales, and processes as we go, inspired by Bion’s ‘containers’ and Illich’s ‘Tools for Conviviality’ (amongst others). This draws on and extends educators existing skills in differentiation and adaptive planning, applying them specifically to creative writing. Drawing on his MSc in Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes (CWTP) and extensive workshop facilitation experience, Caleb will open out and invite input to ways we can boost confidence, self-expression and benefit mental health, through the group writing process.
The Masterclass will be delivered via Zoom webinar, so you can take the session at your own pace, without the pressure of having your video or camera on. Sessions are also recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you will have access to the recording for a month afterwards.
